Tioman & Turtles - My Rite of Passage

The resort looks so amazing during this time of the year... Everything around us looks so alive. What do we do without sunshine...
The sea is like an aquarium, the water looks like gentle waves made from sparkling turquiose diamonds. The water temperature is just right too for skin that's ready to sizzle in the sun.

I've always enjoyed the resort even if it's only for one night sometimes. Feels wonderful to call this HOME.

This month, something really special took place. My dream finally came true. A dream I've had since I could remember, more like a 'if only' than a 'I wish' kinda wish, but never ever expected it to really really happen. A sea turtle project I can call my own!

This wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for my really good friend, Rowena. She and her husband Tengku Intan of the Pahang royal family had initiated this great move on the turtle sanctuary and had decided to do this on their piece of paradise, which is named after him. Fantastic effort.

We've been looking forward to finally getting the land cleaned up (majorly), have the hatchery built and start working! They had then planned to invite the Sultan Of Pahang to officiate the opening of TAT at Teluk Sri Intan on 14 May 2009, in conjunction with Tioman's yearly Eco-Challenge that kick-started on the same day. The Sultan of Pahang also became the patron of the project. His Majesty has made a substantial donation to the project which will benefit the project substantially.

This great turtle project now covers the whole of Tioman (not just one beach as before - Juara ) with the first designated sanctuary at Teluk Sri Intan just 2km from JapaMala. A hatchery has been built, collection of turtle eggs has started and JapaMala is now a partner of TAT with licence to assist in all sea turtle conservation efforts on the island.

As all 12 of us were ready for dessert at the pier on the night of May8, a phone call came from the keepers that a turtle has landed. CTA 9.45pm. It was an extremely beautiful night, the perfect full moon cast light on the entire coast. We had no trouble seeing even without a torch. Perfect, because no torches are allowed on any turtle beach. We all hopped onboard our speedboat and headed out to Teluk Sri Intan, a stunning stretch of less than a km of white-sand beach. Volunteer quarters, info center, and a lab have yet to be developed for the near future. But for now, this amazing spot is an island unto itself.

We then hopped into a buggy and were on our way to the sanctuary from the jetty. Some working folks were already there, whispered to us with a finger pointing to the 'mother' that has dug a pit and ready to lay her eggs.

This could take up to 4 hours sometimes but I was ready to camp out there all night - although i wasn't exactly dressed for turtle work, yeah, i was in this long sun dress. But was ready to go on all fours nonetheless, to dig holes in the sand if needed.

And so I did really, end up digging, in this dress :D Well, that's what volunteers do! The Green Turtle, which looked like an Olive Ridley to me because of its olive-shaped shell, laid 96 eggs. It was unfortunate that we didn't tag her....nor did we have a tape to measure her. I assume she must be about 1m in length and noticed too that she had no barnicles at all on her shell or flippers. Perhaps a young mother, this one.
Oh I felt so right at home at this sanctuary helping the pakcik dig 2 more holes in the hatchery to place the eggs - 30 in each I was instructed. This is something I had missed so terribly since my last visit to Ma D'aerah. I remembered what to do, how to do it... as if I had just done it yesterday. I can do this all season!

Me at MaD'areah WWF Sea Turtle Sanctuary in Kemaman years ago...

More eggs hatched the same night, so green babies were released the next morning by His Majesty during the ceremony.
The rest were then released that same evening by Tengku Intan (in snazzy red crocs), Datin Rowena (lady at front), Tengku Sharul (next to Rowena with hand in turtle box) and Tengku Qamarina (standing next to her dad looking on). And Kelly, in the next pic with Shahrul and Qamarina.

Immediately, I felt a desperate need to develop this sanctuary. We need people here to run it. We need specialists, scientists, we need volunteers! The only person who came to mind was my dear friend, CEO of WWF, Dino.

I'm gonna call him when I get back to KL.

Sensational SYDNEY!

Those 10 days which included 2 weekends in Sydney was my first-ever girlfriends-getaway. I worked hard, played hard and spent even harder! We all did. There’s so much to do in this city that 10 days did not get me far enough.

Linna, Jasmine, Li Leng, Jennifer, Ning and I all stayed just minutes-walk away from the Paddy’s Market, Chinatown, Darling Harbour, the Railway Square Central train station. It was so convenient. We walked ALOT but pleasant walks, took buses and trains quite a bit too. We bought a one-week train-bus-ferry pass for $46 for unlimited rides. What limo??

Bondi was on the top of our 'must do' list on Day 1 after a pole session with Jamilla. While Ning frantically walked the entire junction looking for an ATM, and Jasmine went after her after a while, the rest of us, Li Leng, Linna and I just sat by the roadside and watched people and dogs go by.
......or rather, let people watch US :D Now we can all say we've BEEN THERE (Bondi) DONE THAT (this)! Ning still never got her cash from any machine but she was all smiles anyways... as usual.
No chance to go to Manly Beach up north which is apparently less crowded and more beautiful than Bondi Beach, or The Blue Mountain, not even The Rocks (Ning went though.... bad girl. She skipped pole classes to go sight-seeing!) Whatever time I had, we had, we shopped. Hardly ate, but yeah, shopped! A helluva lot.
The shopping in Sydney is awesome. So much so that we, Ning and I came prepared to go home with a brand new luggage bagged with brand new things. (Errr.... correction. Ning went home with 3 new luggages as a matter of fact...). Easter was around the corner so how could I possibly go home without a few kilos of my favorite Cadbury Cream Eggs, right? Guess what, now they even have mini bite-size ones too!
Heh, definitely need all of THOSE to do THIS later....

Ning and I also made it to the Oceanarium at Darling Harbor, on the 2nd Sunday when the other girls flew home. Sunday in Sydney is H.A.P.P.E.N.I.N.G. The atmosphere at the park, the harbour, the streets was just amazing.

As it was my first time to Sydney, I made a series of discoveries. First, there was Krispy Kreme (thanks to Linna). Never quite a doughnut fan, but WOW, those original glaze ones are really the best! Oh my god, makes me salivate now just thinking about it!! Then there was Supre - every big city has such a store - for affordable fashion clothing and sports wear which we were all too happy to have discovered (it's located near Castlereigh St/Queen Victoria Building). Although we chose to not discover the notorious Kings Cross, we did not come all this way to miss out on some clean fun...seriously. So we dropped in at Man’s Gallery (boring), then watched strippers pole dance at Minx (a little better) and bought a lap dance after (only $30). During Earth Hour, we ate at the famous Doyle’s fish and chips at Watsons Bay as suggested by Ning (very expensive dinner!); learnt to lap dance from the very hot Candice (Miss Pole Dance Australia 2007),
couldn't get enough of the cheapy-cheery Paddy's Market we went to almost every morning (from fresh Turkish Delight, Sex-In-The-City dresses to hair extensions) as well as the factory outlet stores at Market City; learnt to do the famous ‘Deville’ from Jamila (Miss Pole Dance Australia 2005) yayyyy! ;

Ferried pass the Opera House under the bridge; rode 16 stops on a train to watch Bobbi pole dance (and 16 stops back - we goofed around and had to play charades to entertain ourselves);
Spent one entire beautiful, sunny Saturday shopping at the weekend Paddington Market on Oxford St, where we found some amazing things;

....even walked 'into' the Australian MTV Awards at Darling Harbour on our way to dinner one evening!
Learnt tricks from the very animated Suzie Q whose super-strong bod doesn't quite match her bubbly, child-like persona; finally, we braved the fear & embraced the fun while we learnt to contort like an aerialist on hoops for 2 days.

During this whole time, I discovered something extraordinary about myself. Every morning, I
struggled to gain a semblance of consciousness as we bend, stretch, kick and gyrate to upbeat warm-up instructions from some of the world’s best pole instructors. Not especially a keen morning- workout person to begin with, this nasty flu that suddenly hit me made the sessions harder to endure. My brain screamed through a throbbing fog every morning and every time I had to go upside-down or spin on those brass poles. But thanks to the hot morning showers and

the myriad of medicines available, my painful throat was numbed, sinuses cleared, fever suppressed and my muscles didn’t even recognize the aches and pains from both the sickness or the exercises.
But I tell you, thank god the weather was sunshine-fantastic. March and it was warm...god must love me. And thanks to my gals...for good company & great motivation. They must love me too.

I pulled through a physically-demanding and mentally-challenging 10 days battling a virus which would usually send me vegetating in bed. I did it. I went beyond me! Pretty certain all my gym sessions with Andrew and the pilates and the cardio classes plus the excessive amounts of antioxidant Acai cocktails – which I swear by – did their magic. Hey, NOT ONE DIVA MOMENT ok… no kidding, not a single whimper :D
Affirmation - I know now, what I thought I couldn’t before, I actually could have.
Advice - Keep your spirits high (more so when you’re sick) and you can do anything. It works like a dream... like an energy bar☺

BOBBI THE BOMB
The highlight of all discoveries for us, however was meeting Bobbi. As it turned out after a few sessions with her, she totally became the purpose of our entire trip to Sydney. We walked into

Bobbi’s studio for the first time one morning in March, gawking with excitement as we watched the end of Sassy’s pole routine class. Linna, Jasmine and I exchanged looks right away, telling each other that we’ve come to the right place.

I, while overwhelmed with compulsive anticipation, also recalled feeling unusual emotions at this point….euphoria or depression I couldn’t quite tell. I didn’t quite know why either. I was suddenly transported back to some months back when I felt frazzled by the demands of my everyday life... Must be the pills.

Bobbi led us 3 through her instructions. I followed intently as I pressed both hands firmly on the studio's wooden floor. I immediately felt a tremendous weight...my shoulders suddenly felt heavy with burden. I knew then my demons were back. Now?? Why now?!... must be the pills.

Just as I focused on lifting this nonsense offa me, my hips opened and I felt my legs lift from under my center. They wobbled a little to gain balance but I kept my shoulders pressed hard as my legs continued to lift till they reached the top. I was elated. I just did a handstand develope! Demons vanished, heaviness lifted, my sisters cheered, Bobbi praised. I felt a sudden peace.
And that, was my moment with Bobbi.

Everyone in the world who pole dances, knows Bobbi. Her grace and her amazing execution style is undeniably phenomenal. She takes charge of the pole so effortlessly she made even the most insane move look easy. And she takes her time... to fully extend each move... and to feel the pulse of the music. There's nothing more sensuous than a woman who takes her time... god she's SMOOTH. The only metaphor that comes close to describing her is shaving cream....so smooth and light and so very very CREAMY.

Watching her pole dance for the first time on those thin, spinning brass poles made my self-esteem tumble like I probably would in those vertiginous heels she wears. How Bobbi flies on the pole like a willow in the wind, ever so composed yet so electrifying and without even looking like she was trying just seems superhumanly. How is she aerodynamic like that... as aerodynamic as her 5-inch stilettos! What does she eat???! Forgot to ask.

Anyway, Bobbi found it interesting that we don’t teach with heels. We watched, she mounted a strapless glassy number with red glitter and strutted across her teaching platform as easy as she breathes. Sky-high heels make a woman’s physical structure look so incredibly sexy, but dancing in them is SCARY. One must first learn to walk (in them) before you can fly (in them) no?...heh the possibility of my ankles snapping made me faint with terror already.

I’ve seen so many women in my life but none looked more stunning nor strutted her stuff quite like Bobbi.

Bobbi is super lean and lanky in person – she kinda reminds me of Bo Derek – not super tall though maybe 5ft 8” max, but she does have legs a mile long. Once she mounts her ‘Sasha Fierce’, Bobbi is further stretched to gravity-defying heights. Talk about being in your element...

Bobbi turned out to be such a swell gal. She's very inviting.... very generous. A good person. She taught us so many great tricks and moves. Not once was she hesitant about lending techniques or teaching us stuff we wanted to learn. Sometimes, awesome dancers may not necessarily be awesome instructors. That said, we felt so lucky we got our chance with Bobbi.

She then went and scored even more cookie points for inviting us to watch her live performance in Cronulla on a Thursday night where she not only blew our minds but worked the stage FOR US. She demonstrated tricks that she had taught us earlier, displaying them in combos we could learn later too! Now how cool of a pro is that?! We screamed and cheered at this sportsbar like a bunch of asian groupies :D Well, can’t say we aren't!

It was such a privilege to watch her pole. Eh, can’t say you HAVE because you’ve watched her on video or youtube… it doesn't count. Affective yes for sure, but no way near as affecting as a real-life experience.

Not only did she give us her time of day (as she admits to hardly ever do privates with people she didn’t know), Bobbi said something so significantly flattering, and so powerful that we, The Butterflies, left Sydney famished for more Bobbi time.

Well, the good news is we won’t be famished for long! Bobbi and her sister Kim are hitting town for this year’s APS (Asian Pole Summit 2009). Lucky you pole enthusiasts who are reading this, you’ll get the chance to not only meet her in person (and hopefully they’ll perform too), but learn to dance pole-liciously like them☺ I can’t wait! This year, we’re bringing SLAP (Strip/Lap Dance) worksops to you too! Dates are set so mark your calender ladies!

Date : November 19th – 22nd
Venue : Jitterbugs Swingapore (Singapore)

You may of course sign up through here if you like. Just write in and I'll forward your registration to them!

So there I have it, I returned from Sydney feeling renewed and although a little broke, I'm awfully happy! And inspired:) BIG TIME!

I have loads of videos to post so be back to watch!

BALI

To all my readers and friends, I’m so very sorry for the long silence.
Yes…SILENCE was exactly what I needed. And no…I haven’t been lazy. Maybe even a little tired of routine. The work and the business only sucked me deeper into a rut which I was fighting to get out of. Then came what felt like a toxic reaction – I became everything I’m not. I needed a change so badly or I’d be so burnt out that I’ll actually evaporate.

So I started creative scrapbooking again. Yeah moments to myself, with myself. I went into a scrapbook frenzy and became totally obsessed with it all over again. Seriously therapeutic ok... I began to stay home more often - away from people, away from work, away from routine, away from deadlines, away from everything I know, even away from everyone I love.

Strange....I never liked silence or felt the need to be alone. But it felt so good to just take a moment...a bit of 'ME' time...to not do anything particularly important for a change. Like go take a long long long bath...Especially since I never quite got the chance to enjoy our house since we moved in, I was content being home. And I felt safe....even after the landslide.

I did do an awful lot in 4 months. Apart from my scrapbook projects, I started returning to the gym, enjoying fitball and pilates classes, more frequent body jam classes, taught my own weekly pole classes, watched loads of TV and of course, traveled.

A much needed getaway and what a perfect place to be, Bali. The perfect place to 'heal'...we planned this months ago, way before I knew how much I was gonna need it. God loves me.
So we spent 5 days there end of Feb-early March with some of our resort staff - Mike our butler, Lah our Resident Manager and Andy our Reservations Supervisor.
Although we’ve been to Bali many times, it was the first for them. It may be downright cliche to say this but Bali IS magical. Even though it rained a little, it was so super hot during that time of the year!Despite the heat, being there rendered me cool, like a cucumber. I did come back outta my shell after this trip. How? Dunno. I guess I was glad to get away from it all.

Now I must say the trip would not have been perfect if not for my thoughtful girlfriend, Angie's (you know, the voice on your maxis voicemail...) meticulously devised 'MUST-DO MUST-SEE MUST-GO' list. So accurately detailed and with such heartfelt effort that it can only come from genuine love for the island and its people. You'll see what I mean.

Because I suddenly feel like Oprah and just wanna do something nice for people hence shall bestow upon you this very valuable piece of Angie's goodness. You'll find Angie's very own better-than-lonely-planet list for all your hassle-free travels in Bali. You'll thank me now and thank her later and love her for doing it and love me for posting it:)

Through Angie, we found Putu our tour driver, who then took us to all the right places suggested by Angie; the best Babi Guling lunch, a fantastic dinner at Dirty Duck (oooh the best ever pork ribs!!), the best Balinese souvenirs - peanuts, the most spectacular spot to watch the KECAK dance at sunset - Uluwatu, and some of the most stunning resorts in Asia.
Resorts and beautiful architecture are our thing, so we went around exploring and have collectively recommended the following to stay - ranking them for most stunning design, spectacular location, great service and that special X factor : Bvlgari Resort Ubud, Kayu Manis Ubud and Pita Maha Ubud.
I will post here soon a contact if you need a reliable driver. Trustworthy drivers are hard to find in Bali as most are just looking forward to rip you off.... so beware.

MUST PRINT THIS & USE IT !!!

Bahasa Indonesia express lesson by Angie :
Tips: Speak Bahasa Baku & roll your Rrrrs and they’ll understand you better, eg, terrrima kaseeh, apa khabarrrr, harrrga berrrapa etc. If asking price ‘around how much, how far etc, they’ll say 'kurang lebih’ as opposed to our lebih kurang.
Car is 'Mobil' or 'Transport'. If flag down tax,i Blue Bird is reliable, pakai meter is ‘pa kay Agor’.
Mineral Water is always called Aqua in Indonesia. When asking for sauce or kuah, say bumbu. Wanna buy mosquito repellent, ask for Autan.
Bisa = Boleh (can) Nggak bisa = tidak boleh (can't). Ask Bisa kurang? (lower price?), if their answer is Harga Pas it means best price liao, then cannot bargain. You can always quote a price and give YOUR harga pas. Bebek = Duck - you'll need this when dining at Dirty Duck:) Chilli = Chabek (our cabai)

Price for driver + car : from Seminyak straight to Ubud, 1 way, 1 car is Rp 200,000. If sight see, book for whole day Rp 350,000 per car (RM 116) is fair price.

Tekor Bali Beachside Restaurant & Bar – In Legian, Blue Ocean Beach, more classy beach, many top class handsome football players usually play there in evenings. Pura Luhur Tanah Lot (Temple) – Entrance fee is Rp 10,000 / pax. Most people go for sunset. But can actually go anytime.

Shopping in Kuta
Roadside stalls – Tee-shirt approx. Rp 20,000 or less. Men’s board shorts.

UBUD
Known as the Art, Culture Centre of Bali. This is a place to relax, less hectic compared to Kuta, more picturesque. Temperature is much cooler. Go for long walks, explore surrounding rice fields, nature trails. Ubud is also my personal favorite.

Before departing Kuta to Ubud, tell driver to take you to buy ‘Pis Gor’ (Pisang Goreng), near Jalan Kartika Plaza and Tuban. 1 pisang Rp 500. Buy plenty as you’ll regret if not enough. DELICIOUS! Buy some for driver too lah.

Tell driver you want to go lunch at Nasi Ayam Kedewatan Ibu Mangku, before checking into hotel Adi Cottages (Angie's choice of accomodation). Adi Cottages - Jln. Massage while staying in Ubud
Verona Spa – turn left at Adi Cottages, walk few steps and will see sign, walk to end of lorong. If kena lousy masseuse, immediately ask for change. Rooms open to rice fields, so don’t be surprised if you’re showering or soaking in rose bath and there are old farmers chasing ducks. (Hahahhhhaa!!! Angie is so funny) They’re not bothered to even look at you, naked or otherwise. You’ll get disposable panty. Price : Sorry I lupa liao, check menu.

Sedona Spa – Sister spa to Verona, can ask them to call transport take you there & hantar balik FREE. It’s a bit further but at least you get to head up towards Campuhan.

Plenty of other spas to choose from.

Bebek Bengil or Dirty Duck Diner – MUST TRY! Oh my god the PORK RIBS, one plate sure not enough. Phone: 0361- 975 489 for FREE transport to & from restaurant.
Book table / bale (private hut), right at the end, next to padi fields. Go lunch time, not so many mosquitoes, can see ducks while eating their poor cousins.

I recommend only the signature dish of Bebek Bengil. Crispy duck marinated in herbs & spices for 36 hrs. Rp 70,000 per plate. Portion of half a mini duck is quite small. Served with rice & vegetables, sambal mentah & sauces do ask for more if not enough.
Drinks – try the non-alcoholic, refreshing Sweet & Sour Duck.

Made’s Warung – along Monkey Forest Road. Nice ambience, lovely garden and rice field view, deep inside restaurant. Price : approx Rp 20,000 for Nasi Campur
Café Lotus – Must visit for photos! Ubud has many great places for a drink or snack, but one of the most pleasant is Cafe Lotus, located on Jl. Raya Ubud. Cafe Lotus sits in front of Pura Saraswati and looks out over the tranquil lotus pond. Beautiful. Food is so-so. Drink – Arak Madu (arak, water, honey, lemon) for Rp 16,000.

Murni’s Warung – Angie's favourite for evening drinks / dinner because of the ambience.
Located at Campuhan. (0361) 975233. Call them for FREE transport to & fro hotel. Book table at lowest level, say hi to resident gecko (steve’s buddy) behind big picture on wall.
Food – Bebek Betutu Rp 160,000 for 2 persons. Balinese specialty, marinated smoked duck that falls off bone. Served with rice & veggie. Ask for sambal mentah. Ayam Betutu also quite nice, much cheaper.

Tip: Can ask Murni’s transport pick u in front of Ubud Palace after Balinese Dance performance.

Balinese Dance in Ubud
Watch Legong & Kraton Dance at Ubud Palace. You’ll be approached by ticket sellers on the streets. Price is fixed at Rp 80,000 per pax. Worth it! Showtime is 7.30pm. Go early if want good seats. If rain, show will be moved to opposite hall.

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary - http://www.monkeyforestubud.com
Entrance fee Rp 10,000. IMPORTANT: where there are monkeys, there should be NO SUNGLASSES, Caps, etc. Ensure camera strap around wrist, anything they can cabut from you. Umbrella is good weapon.

READ THIS : Angie's friend witnessed a monkey ‘pon-pon’ a Japanese girl’s ‘nen-nen’ & then ran away. ☺

However, don’t let this deter u from going. As long as you’re aware of your surroundings and walk in groups, you’ll enjoy it. It’s a beautiful, mystical forest with some sacred temples inside. Makes for a lovely, ½ hour non-strenuous walk.

NURAH RAI BALI AIRPORT
Upon arrival at airport, you might have locals in uniform come help you with luggage, say NO, they’re porters and will ask for payment. Get your own trolley.
IMPORTANT: If flying with Air Asia, have your Air Asia booking form with you, or else you will not be allowed to enter airport entrance.
TIPS: If u are wearing sport shoes (which I don’t recommend, slippers or sandals will do), airport security will ask u to take off your shoes, remove your belt etc. Security is very tight. However, you can still have your bottle of water with you at 1st checkpoint, but before you get into departure gate, you’ll have to throw away or drink your water. Angie almost had to drink her chilli sauce ☺(Hahahhaaha!!! Silly..)

Lastly, please open your hearts & mind to the Balinese people, traditions, culture, food etc and you’ll have an amazing, most pleasant experience.

Enjoy Bali !!!

NIAMAH!!!

Sigh... Patrick Teoh lives in the condo at the top of the hill and I live in a house right in front of him. He was in Singapore for an acting job when the landslide happened but his wife Mama Min and children, Laura & Adam were home. They too moved out immediately like we did.

But fortunately, both our properties sit on granite and not landfill soil, according to the geologist my hubby spoke to 2 days ago. So don't worry ok uncle, we're on safer grounds. We moved back in last Thurday already...

Today, for the first time, I walked down the steep flight of steps that cut through from my road to the road below (Wangsa 9) which had caved in from where the slide started (in front of those white houses on hilltop in picture). Looking down at the not too distant aftermath of the tragedy, my heart skipped a beat...how very sad for those whose homes just vanished into bits and pieces (I could see all the debris from the edge where I was standing).... and those families who have lost people they loved.

Today we, the residence committee were all suppose to meet with the MB. But for whatever reason, it didn't happen.

Today I received an email from friend Edna with an account from one of the residents affected by this landslide. Have a read.

Bukit Antarabangsa... Multiple tragedy
December 10, 2008 by drrafick

Today is D5 of the Bukit Antarabangsa tragedy. During the highland tower incident, I was part of the medical team assisting in the rescue and support effort but today I am a
victim of a similar tragedy. Something that I never thought that would have an impact on me. Relatively in comparison, what happened to those families who lost their love ones is nothing compared to what me and probably 2000 other residents had to endure past 4 days. Many tragedies took place this time around. I am not going to be diplomatic about it. I will say it the way I see it.

Within 2 hours after being made aware of landslide, I and several residents of Taman Bukit Utama activated an Ops Centre (known as TBU Ops Centre). We looked at important issues that we needed to tackle, mainly water supply, waste disposal, security, food distribution and medical evacuation. What was supposed to be our Taman Ops centre became the Ops Centre to eight "Taman" surrounding ours who were cut off from the outside world. We had no electricity, water, fixed telephone line internet. Most people had limited food in their house
as they had already planned to travel for Raya hence did not stock up any food.

Within an hour after meeting, we set up and completed a temporary water supply by laying pipes to get mountain water for the residents. Ops centre was up in the next hour and we started communication channel with the outside world via SMS and arranging food and drinking water supply. We took preventive measures to manage disease outbreak by managing waste. All this was done by a handful of people from Taman Bukit Utama Resident Association
(PPTBU). We setup the helipad for the rescue team to come in. With the help of a friend DSP Kumar, we managed to evacuate by air (Medivac) a total of 39 patients which consist of stroke patients, elderly people, kidney failure patients etc. The patients were evacuated by police air wing which was arranged by DSP Kumar from the UTK through his personal contacts. We did all this independently without the support of any help from the Base station at Ground zero.

Within the first 48 hours, while in darkness several homes were reported to have been broken into by unknown people in residential areas adjacent to TBU where there was no or minimal residential coordination among the residents. Food was scarce and cooked food from PBSM (Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah) did not arrive in timely manner. The longest time was dinner that only reached us in the morning which was not edible by then.

While we are stuck, we had VVIP visitors that come to our area. I would say out of many people that came only a handful was actually helpful. YB Elizabeth Wong, a state Exco came with a working group had arranged for generators, fuel, candles, garbage bags and others. She came
by foot with very few people and carried relevant information without empty promises. The IGP came and gave me his personal commitment and blessing that, I continue to handle all air evacuation with the support of Police Udara.

I was told that the Minister of Information visited only the UMNO relief center at a Condo nearby. He did not come to our place. The NGO that is worth mentioning is Mercy who gave me
some drugs, INSAF who open a small medical clinic for 2 days and MAVFCL (Kapt Bala and his crew) which opened a temporary access between Athenaeum condo (the condo at the highest point on the hill) and a generator set to charge hand phones, and Bukit Utama which allowed people to leave by foot.

It is regretful to note that NO government agency deserves any mention in the first 36 hours of tragedy except for Polis Udara and Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat. I think they forgot about us...

While 2000 people were surviving in the darkness with the absence of proper food, Concord Hotel, Ali Maju restaurant, Burger King and many others donated tons of food. Unfortunately, no one attempted to send the food to us. Residents that were not affected by the tragedy
and the rescue workers were enjoying them. The kind of food they got down there was lavish. There was fresh roti chanai, tosai mee goreng etc. The best word to describe the situation down there is "food fiesta". Someone commented that there is so much "Teh Tarik" that you can wash your shoes with it.

The landslide is a major tragedy. The bigger tragedy is that the failure of the government to act fast enough.

While multiple agencies went into action fast, most of them work independently. On the 3rd day, we had 10 soldiers from RAMD with two officers with the rank of Major that came to our centre. I asked them a basic question on their role and the officers could not give me a straight
answer. He was very blur. To me his presence was a liability to the ops center as we had to feed an additional 10 mouth with our limited stocks.

This is not the first time a tragedy took place. The disaster relief operation was not well- coordinated. The command and control was lacking. Information dissemination to the media was scattered and caused panic among the people. Many friends and relatives outside called us and we could not entertain them, as our battery power was limited. In terms of political publicity, I would say UMNO was a clear winner. This is because they control the media.

Unfortunately, I would say that in the hearts of the people UMNO loss big time. The high-level
conduct of their people on the ground and the selective help that was given out was too much to bear. In fact, the Putri Umno head that I've known over the past few months was behaving in such a highhanded manner that that really showed her true colours. They were hoarding food and distributing them to "their people".

Their action has only reinforced my idea that the Federal and the State Government must be from different parties. This is needed for check and balance. Malaysians must realize that for the sake of our own lives and our own children lives, we have to have balance of power. It is because of the lack of balance of power; the water catchment area that is a state land that was given to MBF which is now known as "Bukit Antarabangsa". In my assessment, the government is liable. In this case, the government which was led by BN in the state of Selangor and at National level in the past 50 odd years, is liable for the suffering of the people of Bukit Antarabangsa. They are liable because they alienated unsuitable land for development. They are liable for giving the people the false sense of security by approving development plans and projects. They are liable for hiding information from the people that shows that the area that we are buying is not safe for living. I will only vote for the balance of power in the future and UMNO will not be part of that balance.

NIAHMAH!!!

Asian Pole Summit 2008

Seriously, this post is long overdue. Apart from so much that has been happening around here, I havent the chance to get these pictures until NOW. Horrendous.... just horrendous.
Anyway, it's never really too late. It's actually quite a nice thing to do right now, looking back at all the fun we had at the Asian Pole Summit, which is already more than a month ago (gosh, how time flies!). Those were truly awesome times; months and months of hard work, sleepless nights worrying sick of our Bleeding Love routine, organizing the pole competition in Singapore and then bringing the APS to KL plus organizing the Pole-Licious Party at Mandi-Mandi. Auh... we must all be masochists.

But you see, hard work always pays off:) What came out of all this were such meaningful times, new friendships were formed and existing ones deepened. I love and will cherish every single moment we, our team, and KT had spent together.

Nikita of THE LADYBIRDS (KT's laughing medicine) and Xena of THE BUTTERFLIES (KT's doppelganger)

during rehearsals....

Finally performing on the X-Stages! The poles are 50mm, not the ideal size of our preference but do or die ok. Glad we nailed it anyhow. But these stages are brilliant. Extremely sturdy, felt as though I was dancing on an X-Pole stuck to the floor and ceiling. Extremely well-built.

THE BUTTERFLIES dancing to Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love

I tell you, our performance may have rocked but it wasn't The Butterflies nor the exquisite FIREFLIES that got the town talking...
The Ladybirds which consists of 3 dynamic women all aged 50 and above, and the impressive performance by The Caterpillars made up of 3 sisters Lizzie, Bella & Isabelle aged between 5 and 12, left audience jaw-dropped struck by awe.

The Ladybirds are just phenomenal. These 3 women, Nikita, Annie & Meyin are all 50 and above. Their appearance and performance has garnered so much interest that the media can't get enough of! These ladies have appeared in both TV and radio interviews as well as made national news. So, still think you're too old to pole?

THE LADYBIRDS dancing to PCD's Sway

Then of course there's the SuperWoman, mom-to-be KT Coates sent shock waves across The Arena when she showcased her usually electrifyingly athletic performance and her insane physique being 4 months pregnant!

Ladies, please don't do this at home...not especially when you're pregnant at any stage ok?

Baby? Where???!!

Then the APS moved on to KL. 2 days of great learning for KL folks here including a fantastic show at The Pole-Licious Party in Mandi-Mandi restaurant with great food and an awesome showcase by THE FIREFLIES, THE LADYBIRDS, Aisa-Pacific Pole Champ Amerthyst and of course, KT.

From KL, we flew to Tioman for a much-deserved breakaway at my second home, JapaMala. Malcom 'KokTeez' Maclean finally flew in to join us. Oh gosh, the events that took place at the advent of his arrival were hilarious! That's a chapter on its own...later.

The happiest couple is bound to bear the happiest child, that i can tell you.

Yup... baby Maclean is definitely nestling in there. KT sent me this ultrasound image of her baby girl just last week. Princess Alexandra it says.... cute. Alexandra Maclean,....resonates like a true Hollywood royalty doesn't it? Look, we have a baby already living a vertical life!

Most recent picture of KT at 5 months. But baby? WHERE??! You still don't look pregnant babe. You're one hell of a yummy mummy.

Bukit Antarabangsa Landslide

That night, I threw an intimate party at home for my pole team & KT Coates, in celebration of the Asian Pole Summit which took place on the following morning plus the arrival of Mr.Malcolm "Kokteez" McClaine, KT's boyfriend. We all had a fantastic time. Our wonderful Italian chef, Daniele cooked up some truly yummy feast for us all with his signature Tiramisu to finish.

It was such a beautiful night....our turqoise pool illuminated in the darkness of night. My friends couldn't help but dip their feet in. A relaxing treat after a full week of pole dance training, performing and workshops in Singapore.

The air was calm & cool, like most nights up here in the hills of Bukit Antarabangsa. We could hear vaguely from a distance, rave music and a voice working the crowd in some sort of party at the bottom of the hill. We bitched a little. Aside from that, it was an amazing night. No signs of what was to become the country's biggest landslide looming just 300m from our very house.

We heard nothing though.... just my dogs barking, going berserk in the middle of the night which never happened before. So I was woken. Then shortly after, my handphone rang. Surprised and dazed from sleep I answered a call from Sofia Jane, my girlfriend. It was 4.30am.

She sounded really concerned, rather panicky really, "Are you ok Maple?" I said hey and told her I was fine, I was sleeping, but what's wrong? Sofie then said there has been a massive landslide in Bukit Antarabangsa where her mother-in-law lives and that she was in shock. I later learnt the landslide stopped right infront of her apartment block.

I then told hubby about the landslide and started to look outside the window. No sounds, nothing. Only around 5ish we heard helicopters. The rescue teams were beaming light into the valley. Then soon I got a call from Mama Min (Patrick Teoh's wife) who lives right across us, that the police has ordered everyone from her apartment to come outside. I looked out at the front of my house and saw loads of people just hanging out, not knowing why exactly nor what to do.

We took Mulan for a walk down Wangsa 9 and saw trees had fallen over the road - apparently there's where the landslide orginated from. Those abandon houses on the edge of the hill next to these broken trees, were left half-built for the longest time. We cant help but wonder if this entire row of 10 if not more, will be next.... and how many more houses adjacent to them plus those at the bottom will be avalanched.

Not really knowing what to do (which seems to have been the case in these 6 days), we walked back home and i took a shower. At least one thing I know I must do, is to get to the studio. It was the first day of The Asian Pole Summit in KL. Hubby was standing by the pool, looking out into the valley, checking intensely if something was happening down the road. That was when the 2nd slide took place. I too, from my bathroom door upstairs, saw trees coming down and heard people screaming from a distance.

"Cookie, get all our luggage out. We're packing some things and getting outta here!"

That night, we moved into our neighbourhood hotel, The Flamingo. Still not really understanding why but we needed a good night's sleep. In the next few days, we still didn't know the status of our house! We've officially been asked to evacuate, but for how long? When will we know if our house is safe to live in again? Or never? All the residents living around here share the same predicament. It didn't take long before everyone is infuriated by the lack of information from the authorities, angry because we have to leave our homes and left in the lurch, scared because of all the uncertainties and impatient and frustrated because no one can answer all our questions! What's worse, no work has been done to the site, to strengthen or prevent futher slides till this day.

I went to a meeting last night near the tragedy site with some residents, to talk to the state assemblyman YB Azmin Ali. Clearly a waiting game, we were told that the results of the land situation, soil movements and safety status of us living above the landslide, will only be out 10 days from Monday.

Today is also the anniversary of the tragic Highland Towers collapse. It has been 15 years yet what has come out of victims' fight? And just a week ago, the landslide in Ulu Yam which claimed lives and soon after, in Damansara.

Hillside developments have apparently been frozen since the landslide but that's not true as some have witnessed continuous works. In fact, alot of housing projects on Bukit Antarabangsa and the neighbouring Ukay Heights have had the green light to proceed even without approval....no CFs. How's that?

Are we to blame for trusting the goverment in the first place that a property
is unsafe to buy? Even if we wanna check, where do we go?

This is our lives, our families and our investments. We hope our new ruling party PKR will now stand up for us and proof their worthiness of our votes and resolve this on-going crisis that has been left unattended for over 20 years.

Lnadslides caused by heavy downpour therefore not a man-made disaster? Heh... which moron would think that.

Btw, we decided to move back into our home today. It must be bizarre and silly in some's opinion to see us moving our things back into what's been referred to as a 'deathtrap' when others are frantically moving out. Well, I feel good being in my own home at the moment. I find more peace being around our things, surrounded by all our doggies and sleep in our own bed than getting pushed around and left to wonder. Besides, our engineers said there hasnt been any soil movement at all on our road since the catastrophe... and apparently, our house sits on rock and not soil. So that's good to know;)

Treats at 35

First comes the surprise party. The fruit of conspiracy by two very cheeky people in my life Ning and Skipper. The party was not for me alone but Chris as well, whose birthday was on Merdeka day. Turned out, Chris had no idea either, so he was just as shocked heheheh. Double happiness it is!

No suspicion whatsoever, these two buggers sealed the plan pretty well la. It was a Sunday and we did nothing unusual - he goes cycling then we go lunch somewhere. Besides, Ning had already 'booked' me for birthday lunch a week back so i thought that was it, my quiet birthday meal with my nearest and dearest after she gave me 2 Madonna biogrpahies as birthday present.
Heh! I was in fact really really really looking forward to going home alone and taking that nap after lunch since I was feeling rather sicklish.

Then, there came a very loud 'SURPRISE!!!!!' as I see my dad hopping out of some bush in my garden....which almost set me to self-defense mode.

We were directed straight to our birthday cake which Ning had ordered.
Sorry Chris, it looks like your birthday cake will have to be a pole dance cake too hahahaahha!!! Like it or not, your wife has now insinuated to the world that you're attempting to pole dance.

YES!!!! Things a man has gotta do to please his wife huh.... Kinda makes me wonder if it's Skipper's idea on the symbolism here. I can hear him say, "Organizing this entire birthday suprise plus all the other treats that come with it is as hard as pole dancing, Cookie!"

All our friends were of course invited secretly.... oh how sweet.....:) Including the chefs and the planning of all the food plus a full bar too! Somekhuan, our Grand Chef cooked all my favorite food....from deep-fried chicken cartilage to cincau. It was a real treat:) Btw, know what my birthday wish is?

Then came the car.... hehehe.... the car I've been eyeing for years, The 206 Peugeot, which I never got around to buy simply because I love my 12-year-old Honda City too much to give it up for anything else. Well, looks like my birthday wish just came true : HAVE MY CAKE AND EAT IT TOO! I don't have to sell my Honda if I don't want to;)

THANK YOU SKIPPER!

Then comes the surprise birthday trip;) My skipper.... tid-for-tad la! Because for his 40th birthday in July, I had taken him on a surprise place-hopping trip ala Amazing Race style - no clue where he was going until I hand him the envelope at the airports. So now, he has flown us to Phuket. Though it didn't take me very long to figure out that I was gonna welcome another bigger surprise flying in from Singapore!

Hehehe.... none other than my best friends Jacqueline & Nic plus our godbabies, Shayla and Sara together with their grandma and maid!

It rained and rained perpetually in Phuket. Feeling a little under the weather still myself, I decided to go get pampered instead. Errr..... if to be pampered could mean a little suffering sometimes.... Hahaha! Been there done that with the braids now. I can't say I'd do it again though.

I must say this is the best birthday I've ever had because I got to be with all my closest and dearest friends, even the farther ones. Jasmine and Linna, although you were far, you know you're as close to me as my heartbeat;) It has been a fantastic year with friends...REAL friends.

I really really did have my cake and ate it too, didn't I?

DjayPee's CD Launch Party

So much has happened since I last blogged.... Apart from having been terribly busy with the usual work, I've also been nominated in the Great Women of Our Time award by Malaysia Women's Weekly magazine for the Public Service & Education category last month. But the highlight of this period has got to be my first-ever pole performance in KL, at my very own restaurants with dream team, The Butterflies. As you all may have noticed by now, my obsession with pole dancing is palpable. Needless to say, it has taken center-stage in my life superceding everything else, everybody else. And when I love, I love with all my heart. That said, I train with all my heart.

DjayPee, who's a very dear friend, has decided to produce his own albums and launch them anyway. Passionate about his music, he needed to get out there. When you hear his compositions, you'll understand why his songs truly deserve to be heard.

A few months prior to this launch this night at our Il Tempio & Mandi-Mandi, I had texted Jean-Pierre (his real name) that perhaps he should do a song just for the pole performance I had in mind for his big day! 2 weeks of silence. Then a dinner invitation. 2 weeks of creative confinement apparently in the highlands, Smoke House Inn in Fraser's Hill this time. And OBSESSION was born. (click on link to listen to tune)

His musical style, which is ethnic-fusion, worked like a dream, like I had imagined it. That's familiar territory for me. Eastern tradition meet Western groove.... Nothing would've been more perfect than to choreograph and dance to OBSESSION which eventually became the opening of his launch party on the night of Aug 25.

The 'qi' was buzzing. Instincts were right. Beneath the forested canopy, the strong presense of close friends weathered any storms of doubt. And above the clouds, some divine intervention kept the rain out. Indeed a magical evening. Within the jungle enclave, we construed from all the elements nature has to offer and used them all to fully conceptualize the show. We sent DjayPee's 30ft up to make his appearance on a rock wall against the hill next to the waterfall; Wei Jun danced his lyrical piece on a little podium that a statue used to sit; Jovian used the raised alley with the jungle as the backdrop as the catwalk for his fashion show; The Butterflies (Linna, Jasmine & I) all pole-danced at elusive places in the trees, depicting the imaginery dance of mystical forest nymphs. I love that! We all love that.

The happening was typical DjayPee: an event that showed the eclecticism of his tastes and the creative partners around him, a series of performances and viewings that showed the range and talents of this unique European born artist who calls Asia his spiritual home.

Great friends with big names in their field like charismatic dancer/choregrapher Wei Jun, dynamic fashion designer Jovian Mandagie and sultry emcee Angie Ng, also contributed tirelessly, unconditionally. We were all there to celebrate DjayPee's 50th birthday too!!

Angie Ng + Wei Jun + The Butterflies horsing around

For those who wonder who my dear friend DjayPee is, here's some literature :
DjayPee, award-winning electronic musician and producer (his track I FEEL LOVE won the Grand Prize of the Vocal Downloads contest hosted on Broadjam, triggering Santana's Tony Lindsay to comment that the song had a very uplifting appeal ) has been buried deep in the jungle environs of his mind, slowly nurturing the songs that would declare his new artistic direction. DjayPee says with focussed intent,
"This was a beautiful project, representing the achievement of a journey that I started several years ago. I really feel that, as a debut, this sets my artistic agenda out there, lets people know how Asia and Europe sound when they begin a romance."
Like a master alchemist he combined bits of Bach; whisperings by none other than Pathana; Erhu (Chinese Violin) stylings by master Chan Kum Loong; violins; cello by virtuoso Corinne Morris; tropical drums and dozens of exotic instruments and of course the solid, smooth house beats that he's known for. Then, with his signature mischievous grin, DjayPee fused the ingredients under the mixing decks of studios in France and Malaysia, tapping the shoulder of famous Asian producer JD of Pop Shuvit fame to assist him in the endeavour. The result? A magical two CD set, one down-tempo called LOUNGE for evening refreshing, for idling the mind on the temples of Angkor Wat or the shadows of a Parisian night. The other disc, TEMPO, is for moving, for making magnetic energy glow; when you listen to it you feel that your legs are compelled to keep the beat. Tempo is an invitation to let it all go, to get the party started.

Both LOUNGE and TEMPO have extensive text explanations of the particular songs' inspiration so that listeners can visualise the aural landscape being presented. Picture yourself laying under palm trees in Cambodia, around a campfire on a great plain, surrounded by tradition desert violins and a Mongolian singer, imagine the sound of your body after a massage, as your muscles come back to place; these are just some of the musings that DjayPee presents as a backdrop to TEMPO and LOUNGE tracks.
Get a gist of DjayPee's music by clicking HERE.

These 2 cds are available for sale at TAMARIND SPRINGS.
So come and get them!
